Electronic Displays

Electronic displays are basically output devices. There are many types of electronic displays and each has its own pros and cons.

Some of the most common types of electronic displays are the CRT monitors that you use for your computers. Another type is the LED face of a watch. These are just two types of electronic displays.

As you might imagine, there are many other types of electronic displays. Some of these are very simple, encompassing only lights. The lights come on when needed and go off when not needed. Other types might include oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supply boards, and other types of controls and testing equipment.

The electronic displays that we are most accustomed to are those that share information with us. These types often display information on a screen or they may use various meters or monitors. Other types of electronic displays incorporate a set of controls with the information. This allows the operator to make adjustments to a system as real time information is presented.

For the novice electronics buff there are kits available that can be built that are working electronic displays themselves. These kits utilize the basic principles of circuit boards and controls and are fairly easy to assemble with only a few affordable tools.

Some of these kits will use lights as the indicator signals for the panel. Others will use LED (Light Emitting Diodes) as the signal indicators. And still others will use a combination of the two in order to give the hobbyist a better understanding of both systems. By working with scaled down circuits you can learn the true principles behind electronic displays and how they work. It is also a great way to learn more about diagnosing problems when they do not work. In fact, this smaller scale hands on approach is perhaps the best way to really learn the systematic theory behind the ways machines communicate with humans. And, as mentioned above, it only requires a few common tools to build these smaller models.

In addition to learning the principles, building your own electronic displays is a good way to learn about controls as well. Most of the kits that you can buy will come with some form of controls that you must also incorporate into the system. This is one of the best ways to learn about controls and how they work in relation to electronic displays.
