RF Transmitters
RF transmitters are the devices that we use to broadcast radio signals. These signals can then be picked up by RF receivers. This is the basic idea behind radio.
In some circles, RF transmitters are known as emitters. For practical purposes, the two terms can be interchangeable as both devices are used to send out radio signals.
The study of RF transmitters can be exciting and it can be challenging. The very basic study of this area of electronics can be simple and even the beginner can build RF transmitters that will work. However, that is only the beginning of this very large body of knowledge. At one time, the study of AM and FM radio was considered somewhat of the standard, but that has changed with modern technology. If you want to be proficient in RF transmitters today you must be willing to delve much deeper.
For the novice, the idea of RF transmitters is fairly straightforward. A device that has some sort of power supply attached to it can be designed to emit a signal. This signal will be of a certain frequency. If a receiver has been tuned for that particular frequency, and if it is powerful enough to pick up the signal, the receiver will be able to capture that signal and broadcast it via a speaker.
As you might imagine, there is a lot that must happen in tandem in order for this to work. The RF transmitters that are being used must have enough power to "throw out" the signal. The RF receiver must be tuned to within the frequency range of the signal, and if either of these basic requirements is not met, the signal will be lost.
One of the very best ways to learn more about RF transmitters and RF receivers is to build one. There are many different models of these devices available for purchase and most of them are easy enough to assemble that most home hobbyists can complete. These devices come in kit form and they require only a few simple tools, all of which can be found easily.
By building your own RF transmitters you can see firsthand how the circuits and the components of those circuits work together to achieve the desired results. You can also find complete kits that include not only the RF transmitters but also the receivers that will pick up the signals as you send them out.
